Bio: Debra Ann Schulte, 54, of Redfield, SD died
peacefully on January 25, 2010 at MeritCare
Hospital in Fargo, ND of brain cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, January 29, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton, SD. Fr. Bob Lacey will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton. Pallbearers will be David Aune, Jim DeLozier, Charlie Larsen, Jason Larsen, Dean Lippert, and Larry Schulte.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1-4:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield with a rosary and scriptural wake service at 5:00 pm at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. Visitation will continue until 8:00 pm at the church in Redfield and then one hour prior to the funeral service at the church in Yankton on Friday.

Debra Ann Schulte was born April, 5th, 1955 in Yankton, SD to Wayne & Dolores (Sylliaasen) Schulte Ahern.

She attended Yankton Public School and graduated from high school in Yankton in 1973. She attended college at the University of Colorado in Greeley, CO where she earned her
Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1977. Her teaching career began in Wood, SD. She earned her Master of Arts majoring in Speial Education at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 1987. The summer of 1987 she and her daughter, Marissa moved to Redfield, SD.

She began teaching at the Redfield Public School where she has touched the lives of many children the past 23 years. Her passion was teaching kindergarten and she had a special place in her heart for children in special education. Debra enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, scrapbooking, and quilting. She especially loved spending time with her granddaughter, Charisma. She spent time volunteering as a Modern Woodmen leader, Girl Scout leader and at the Good Samaritan Center.

Debra is survived by: her daughter, Marissa
Schulte of Fargo, ND; Granddaughter: Charisma Schulte of Fargo, ND; stepsisters: Mary Ann (Ron) Gerk of Lakeville, MN, and Pat (Randy) Koster of Mesa, AZ; Stepbrother, Jim (Tudy) Ahern of Phoenix, AZ; and her mother, Dolores (Dory) Ahern of Yankton, SD.

She was preceded in death by her father,
Wayne Schulte; stepfather, Russ Ahern; maternal grandparents, Alice and James Sylliaasen;
and paternal grandparents Lewis and Lena Schulte.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted and put toward an academic scholarship in memory of Debra Ann Schulte.

Bio: Dolores “Dory” Ahern, age 93, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, July 16, 2019, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospice in Yankton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton with Reverend Larry Regynski officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, July 22, 2019, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 6:45 PM followed by a vigil service at 7:00 PM.

Dolores “Dory” Ahern was born June 27, 1926, in Volin, South Dakota, to James and Alice (Aune) Sylliaasen. She grew up in the Yankton area and graduated from Yankton High School. She married Wayne Schulte on May 24, 1951 in Yankton. After their marriage they moved to Brookings, South Dakota while, Wayne taught at South Dakota State University. After Wayne died in 1965, Dory moved to Yankton, South Dakota and began working at First Dakota National Bank in Yankton. She married Russ Ahern on September 10, 1966. Dory then finished her banking career at First National Bank of South Dakota until her retirement in the late 1990’s.

Dory was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a very active member of The Center in Yankton. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed spending time at The Center playing darts, pool and cards. She loved visiting with people, working in her garden, flowers, baking and her dogs. She was a hardworking, independent woman who took special interest in keeping in touch with everyone. She will be greatly missed.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Marissa Wirth of West Fargo, North Dakota; three great grandchildren, Charisma, Camden and Logan; three step-children: Pat (Randy) Koster of Mesa, Arizona; Mary (Ron) Gerk of Lakeville, Minnesota; and Jim Ahern of Phoenix, Arizona; six step-grandchildren: Jim (Jennifer) Koster of Phoenix, Arizona; Alison (Brandon) Haight of Elberfeld, Indiana; Kelly (Ryan) Shellen of Denver, Colorado; Libby Gerk of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Cristin Gerk of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Charlie (Danielle) Gerk of Lakeville, Minnesota; 8 step-great grandchildren: Kate, William and Lily Koster; Sophie and Caden Shellen and Adison, Abram and Emalyn Haight.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands: Wayne Schulte and Russ Ahern; daughter, Debra Schulte and brother, Warren Sylliaasen.

Bio: Johanna was born on the island of Karmøy (Øvre Falnes farm) to Andrias and Bertha Abelson. She came to America in May of 1887 and settled in South Dakota. She married Mathias Sylliaasen and was the mother of 12 children.

On March 22, 1889 Mathias, who went by the name of Matt, married Johanna A. Abelson and settled on a farm in S. Dakota. They had 11 children; Arthur (1890), Olga (1891), Martin (1893), Bertha (1895), Roy (1897), Walter (1898), James (1900), Guy (1903), Abel (1905), Henry (1906), and Ralph (1909).

Johanna’s family, the Abelsons, were blacksmiths from the town of Skudesnes, in South-West Norway. Her grandfather, Abel Olson Vig, born in 1812, was married in 1837 to Anna Karina Overig, also a resident of Skudesness. The couple had three children; Jo (1838), Ole Andreas (1840) and Bodella (1842).

Ole Andreas was 26 years old when he married Bertha Kristina Johnson. Johanna, born in 1868, was the second daughter in a family of 11 children. Johanna’s next youngest sister, Marie Bodille was married to Karl Gustav, the brother of Ellen Kjeldseth Holm.
