- Bio: Shirley Hanssen, age 85 of Grinnell, died on Thursday, January 2, 2020, at UnityPoint Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell. Funeral services at Trinity Lutheran Church north of Malcom with Pastor Catherine Burroughs officiating. Interment in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.
- Shirley Ann Irwin was born the daughter of Clarence Arthur Irwin and Belva Alice (Neville) Irwin on May 8, 1934, on the family farm in Sheridan Township north of Malcom, Iowa. She was raised on the family farm and educated at country schools near her home. She graduated from Malcom High School with the class of 1952. Following her education, she was employed at St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell.
- Shirley married Kenneth Richard Hanssen on May 23, 1954, at the Trinity Lutheran Church north of Malcom. The couple farmed in the Sheridan Township all of their married lives and they were active, longtime members of the Trinity Lutheran Church. Shirley served on the church altar guild and served countless meals as a member of the funeral luncheon committee.
- Shirley's family and faith were her rock. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren and cherished the time spent together. She loved life on the farm and made sure everything was organized and those who were operating the field equipment were well fed. Her enjoyments were tending to her garden and flowers, watching Iowa Hawkeye basketball, cooking, and having coffee with friends and family. Shirley will be remembered for being selfless, for her faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, and for the love of her family.
- Shirley is survived by her two sons, Steve (Cheryl) Hanssen of Grinnell and Randy (Carol) Hanssen of Urbandale, Iowa; her many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and siblings, Gene (Diane) Irwin of Bloomfield, Iowa and Virginia McDowell of Grinnell.
- She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth R. Hanssen in 2001; and son, Michael Hanssen in 1980.
