    • Bio: Frederick James May, 63, of Springfield, Mo., passed away on June 16, 2009. He was born December 16, 1945, in Belleville, Illinois, to Frederick and Louise (Tiemann) May. Fred graduated from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Following service in the U.S. Air Force from 1968-1972 where he attained the rank of captain, Fred received a masters degree from SIU-E in 1974. After working as a city planner in Edwardsville, Ill., St. Louis and Wichita, Kansas, Fred joined the Springfield Planning Department in 1980. He became Director of Planning and Development in 1985, serving the community until his retirement in 2003. During his tenure, Fred served as special assistant to the City Manager where he led the development of the Vision 20/20 long term planning process for Springfield, including creation of Jordan Valley Park and center city revitalization. He was a passionate bicyclist and was a founder of Ozark Greenways. Following his retirement from the city, Fred continued his commitment to community service through his work in long term disaster recovery planning. He worked as the FEMA Long Term Recovery Manager for the City of Stockton following the devastating 2003 tornado. Fred was also instrumental in developing long term recovery plans for Charlotte and Escambia Counties in Florida following the 2004 hurricanes and participated in recovery planning for other communities in Kansas and Missouri. Fred is survived by his wife, Diane; sons Brian, Christopher and Cullen; beloved grandson Ian May; siblings and their spouses, Dan and Linda May, O'Fallon, IL; Tom and Sheila May, Lilburn, GA; Tim and Barb May, Orlando, FL; Barb and Steve Joyce, Gillispie, Ill.; Beth and Steve Krakosky, Belleville, Ill.; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and close friends Vern Morgan, Bill Compere, Benjamin Alexander, Mike Keefe, Dave Perez and many others who brought joy to his life and were by his side as he fought the battle with ALS. Services will be held on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 1 p.m. in Greenlawn Funeral Home South, Springfield, with inurnment at 2 p.m. in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
