- Former Alaska resident Ernest H. "Ernie" Rasmussen, 71, of Kettle Falls, Wash., died peacefully Oct. 24, 2003, at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Wash., surrounded by family. A graveside service was held at Port Blakely Cemetery, Bainbridge Island, Wash.
- Mr. Rasmussen was born Feb. 16, 1932, to Ernest and Irene (Rogers) Rasmussen in Eagledale, Wash. He graduated from Central Kitsap High School, Silverdale, Wash., in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served three years. Mr. Rasmussen was stationed in the United States and Austria. While in the military, he served with the 82nd Airborne and was a military police officer. After being discharged, he returned to Darrington, Wash. Shortly after leaving the Army, he became a Seattle police officer and served there until 1965. In 1965, he accepted a position with U.S. Customs Service in Alaska. During his years with the Customs Service his many positions included sky marshal, customs inspector, firearms instructor and port director. After retiring from U.S. Customs in 1991, he and his wife moved to Carroll, Iowa, where he worked at New Hope Village for nine years. In 2000, they moved to Kettle Falls, where he enjoyed fishing and golf. He greatly enjoyed his home, family and friends. His family wrote that he will be missed.
- Mr. Rasmussen is survived by his wife of 25 years, Judee; children and stepchildren Lynne and Mike Hatch, Karen and Daniel Duffy, Laurel Rasmussen, Linda and Zach Williams, Ronald Rasmussen, Brian Rasmussen, Kim and Mike Cress, LeeAnn Eddington, Mikki and Ed Gonzalez; 20 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; two former wives; siblings, Ronald Rasmussen, Marlene Wister and Janice Albert; and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Rasmussen; and son, Eric. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army-Spokane, P.O. Box 9108, Spokane, WA 99209. Arrangements are with Kass Funeral Home on Bainbridge Island.
