- Bio: Gladys Marie, daughter of Ben and Lizzie Anderson Lonning, was born Sept. 16, 1903, at Wallingford, Iowa. She moved with her family, to Thor, Iowa, where she was baptized and later confirmed in October of 1917. She graduated from Thor High School with the class of 1921. She was united in marriage with Thomas Johnson in September of 1921. The couple made their home in Eagle Grove, Kansas City and Waukon before moving to Fayette in 1939 where they owned and operated Johnson's Cafe. Mr. Johnson died in 1940, and Gladys operated the restaurant alone until she married Herald (Brownie) Brownell in 1947 at which time the restaurant became G & B Cafe. Gladys and Brownie sold the restaurant in 1957, and retired from business life. For the next several years, they did extensive traveling and worked for friends in the operation of a motel, and carnival activities with her son, Tom. Mr. Brownell died in 1980, and the following year Gladys became a resident of Maple Crest Manor Care Center in Fayette.
- Following a lengthy illness, her death occurred at Maple Crest Thursday morning, Oct. 17, 1985. She was 82 years old and a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette.
- She is survived by two sons, Thomas Johnson of Valrico, Fla., and Robert Johnson of West Union; two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Jean Speck of Jacksonville, Fla. and Mrs. Darwin (Kay) Hopkins of Fort Dodge; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-greatgrandchildren; two brothers, Henry Lonning of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Delmar Lonning of Clarion; six sisters, Mrs. Carrie Nelson of Albert Lea, Minn., Mrs. Sylvia Opheim of Waukon, Mrs. Beulah Moon and Mrs. Helen Milsap, both of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Verna Wikre of Boxholm, and Mrs. Fern Kizer of Eagle Grove; two stepsons, Gerald Brownell of Riverside, Calif., and Gene Brownell of Westgate; and one stepdaughter, Gwenda Brownell of Iowa City. In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, who died in infancy in 1923; four brothers, Edward, Bert, Alfred and Lennie; and one sister, Ruby.
